What I Learned In Nursing School Part 2

Well it’s time to talk about what I learned this semester. I’m a little older, no wiser and have had the better part of my personality sucked out of me.

Here we go!

1.Geriatrics: expectations vs reality.

Disguised as like “Health Illness Concepts” but it’s straight up a geriatrics course. A lot of current nurses warned me this was their least favorite rotation but honestly it was fine. The theory portion was a lot tougher than classes had been at this point. The clinical was in a long term care facility and it wasn’t so bad. Reminded me of my Pine Rest days. I liked the homey feel and getting to know the residents. It’s not glamorous by any means but it has its perks.

2. I felt like I got to know my cohort better.

Nursing student firendship

This semester we merged the two cohorts together so I’ve met mostly everyone now. I feel like clinical has made us feel like we’ve been in the foxholes together and since we’ve been going straight since the end of April everyone is kind over any projected personification and is being stripped down to their raw personalities.

3. Let’s get surgical, surgical surgical. I wanna make your body bleed.

surgery

I got to observe a surgery this semester. I don’t think the surgical life is the one for me. A patient can’t laugh at my jokes with a tube in their throat and no one warns you about the burning flesh smell. (Except for Nicole Boomgaard, thank you for the heads up.)

4. I’ve had to attempt to grow thicker skin.

thick skin

Nursing school is a constant state of feedback and evaluation. Every thought and action you have is questioned and while it’s a good way to promote critical thinking it’s also a way to constantly be filled with self-doubt. It’s easy to take things personally and it can sour your spirit but ultimately it’s best for your learning but hard on a sensitive soul such as myself.

5. The pharmacy is open.

We started off just talking about a few meds at a time but now we are in it med wise. It was a lot of medications to learn with weird strategies to memorize. One involving a blind, pooping, dinosaur as way to remember Tetracyclines.

6. It is clear we need a break.

The collective exhaustion is palpable. The irritably, the sleepy eyes and weight gain (speaking for myself not calling anyone out). Everyone started out so sweet and perky and now even the Elle Woods type people are saying shit like “I don’t know what the fuck she was talking about it lecture today, I was just on amazon the whole time.”

7. I experienced my first code blue.

code gif

It was a jarring experience and some of us were able to do CPR on this patient. It was a great learning experience for us, but definitely a wake up call to what nursing can look like.

8. The actual school is busier.

old student

When we started it was summer and literally no one was on campus but us. We could eat at Subway alone in the basement and park like the gods we thought we were. Now we have to leave an hour earlier to get good parking for afternoon lecture and are surrounded by 18 year olds to make me feel 100.

9.  I am now that person who takes two days to respond to a message.

texting

When someone texts me or emails me I have to internalize it for a solid 48 hours before I can respond unless the question “are you hungry?”.  My brain is just out of room and I feel like a terrible friend/son/brother but whenever I have any down time I just want to lay down.

10. Even though all you do is study you still feel like you know nothing.

Which is obviously not true but everything is so intimidating. They will be talking about something in class and everyone is nodding along and you’re like “am I the only one who is lost or doesn’t know what a saline lock means?” Once you talk to everyone you realize they are all just faking it too.

Zoo-De-Mack Ride!

So this past weekend my sister Sam and I went up north to participate in the Zoo De Mack bike event. It was a first time for both of us and I figured I hadn’t posted in a while and this was the perfect opportunity.

For those of you who don’t know, Zoo De Mack is annual event (this being the 28th if I’m not mistaken). It involves biking from the Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs to Mackinaw City which is roughly 50 miles.

We arrived Friday night at the resort.

IMG_3442

The clouds make it seem creepy and ominous but it was cute. Check in was real cute and we got vitamin b 12 injections and beer so who could ask for more?

IMG_3365

Registering for the ride and waiting to get our B12 shots.

This is us post shots.

Then after the shots there is gear store where they sell all this used gear for very cheap which was amazing. Then upstairs they have a party.

IMG_3367

Cyclists love to fricken drink. I always forget that until I see them.

Then Sam and I were thinking we were so financially responsible and decided to stay at family friend’s cottage in Indian River which is about 25 minutes away. obviously every time you go up north google maps will fail you and it results in Sam and I fighting in the car on a dark road where surely a serial killer is waiting for us. Eventually we run out of steam and end up at the cottage. We got all ready for the ride and Sam got sucked in to Percy Jackson and The Lightening Thief on TBS. We both debated skipping the entire weekend adventure and staying in the cottage that had hot water and premium cable.

IMG_3368

Picture of the view from the cottage.

The next morning we had a nutritious McDonald’s breakfast (one of the many fast food choices in Indian River) and made our way to the start. It was sunny but a crisp 45 degrees. The ride doesn’t have a formal start. You can begin anytime between 7:30-10:30 and we got there at about 8 so we could give ourselves enough time to finish.

IMG_3373

All geared up and ready to go! Not many people that early so parking and getting started was real easy. About 4,000 people sign up for this so the road is crowded but there was barely any cars and police help at the intersections. They had a lot of water and bathroom stations in the beginning.

Diverse group of cyclists for sure, a lot of senior couples, people stopping to have beers on the side of the road, saw a few people in flip-flops but I’m happy to say I barely saw anyone without a helmet.

The first treat of the ride were the trilliums! They are these white flowers that grow like lilacs (I’m getting whiter every sentence I write I’m aware) and I never knew my dream was to ride next to Lake Michigan surrounded by flowers but my dream is to ride my bike next to Lake Michigan surrounded by flowers.

IMG_3387IMG_3385

Here they are, and I all I saw was…

and A little

Lots of pretty views, a lot of vineyards.

IMG_3376

Can’t forget my first blood sugar break of the ride.

IMG_3375

Then up one of the biggest hills we could start to see the Lake!

IMG_3381

Once we got to the top Sam basically looked like this is in her head.

Image result for I want more than this provincial life gif

She wasn’t far off either

IMG_3382

The next descent we found the lake!

IMG_3383IMG_3384

Now Sam got real Tyra on me about “finding the light” in this photo and I can’t help but notice there is still a giant shadow over my face.

IMG_3392

Just a random pic of the ride.

By mile 15 we needed to reboost.

IMG_3391IMG_3390

This cafe was cute but had the most haunted bathroom I’ve been in

IMG_3388

Just seems normal, right? Until you examine the wall.

IMG_3389

Tell me that’s not the lady from The Ring?

Then we got to Cross Village at about mile 27 where they provided lunch for us at Legs Inn. Also right before this I called out a lot by strangers for peeing behind a tree which in all honesty I couldn’t believe more people weren’t doing.

IMG_3394IMG_3396

Lunch was just basic brown bag food but the views were amazing

IMG_3399IMG_3400

Just a lot of people having lunch beers honestly.

Post lunch it got very windy and it seemed like less riders.

IMG_3401

We finally made it to Wilderness State Park which is a place Sam and I grew up and still continue to visit to this day.

IMG_3404IMG_3406

Morale starting to get high again post headwinds since we knew this area and knew what it would look like to get into Mackinaw City.

IMG_3410

Last 10 miles! There was still winds and some more hills and then a lovely bike path and then we were getting into Mackinaw City and then…

IMG_3413IMG_3412

Done!!!! We did it!

IMG_3437

IMG_3414

Then obviously we needed to drink but we didn’t stay too long because we had to catch our ferry to Mackinaw Island

IMG_3424IMG_3425

Sam wore her helmet the entire time on the boat.

Then we got to our hotel Island House

IMG_3436IMG_3426

Our room was sad like an apartment you would rent in LA while going on endless auditions.

IMG_3435

The view was good though.

Then after falling asleep for about 2 hours and complaining about not wanting to go out, we checked out the party on the island for a while but honestly had the most fun just strolling around.

IMG_3431IMG_3432

Got very rainy but got slices of pizza and watched some tv before falling asleep. Had strong ambitions the next day of getting things done but it was 41 degrees and raining hard. So we just decided to head home.

IMG_3438

The ferry was very busy and I just sat here and froze while Sam went to buy a sweatshirt for herself.

Then because we biked to Mackinaw City we had to take a shuttle back to our car. There was a girl legit crying in the parking lot because she was so cold and didn’t want to wait for another mode of transportation.

IMG_3439

Got in an uncomfortable van full of strangers.

IMG_3441

Sam’s immediate go to move.

Then it literally became spring again as we started driving down south. Michigan is like the North in Game of Thrones and in Grand Rapids we are like Winterfell but Northern Michigan might as well be The Wall.

We made it home and parted ways and I immediately fell into this position until I started writing this the next day.

IMG_3444

Overall I would say Zoo-De-Mack is totally worth it and I would do it again.

The Whole 30 Challenge Week 2: The Boredom

So as many of you know I’ve been dong the whole 30 challenge. We are now at the halfway point. Who thought we would make it here? Not me every day but we are here nonetheless. The first part of my journey was all about cravings, and being depressed. Now a lot of that awfulness has passed but I’m also pretty bored of variation of eggs and baked chicken.

Here is what I have learned this week.

I will not ever suffer from scurvy because I eat like a 4 lb bag of oranges in 2 days.

The Simpsons food episode 10 upset season 16

Mary (my young sister) is a better chef than me. I spent my whole life thinking she was the ultimate sous chef but it turns out she knows how much cayenne pepper to put on things and remembers to turn off the oven.

I feel like I’m colder a lot more of the time now. That might be just winter but these are my observations.

Fun Bonus Segment!

Gym Bummers!

As the whole 30 keeps on moving, so does the gym time. I’m by no means new to the gym but I feel like as I’m journaling this whole thing I’m making more notes on my surroundings and here are the people who are the most annoying at the gym.

  1. Senior Citizen jibber jabber. I know I know it’s insensitive and it’s not that I don’t want elderly people at the gym. However sometimes they will stand in high-profile places like where you need to swipe your card  or in front of the place where you fill your water bottle and they are just talking to one of their peers about something you will never be able to decipher because you zoned out immediately.

funny movies kids bored twins

2. Locker room lingerers are a thing. There are some people who just love being naked and will use all of their powers to delay getting dressed. They will pace around and ask a loose acquaintance how their kid is doing in school, make small talk with the staff stocking towels all to just remain nude. Like just get dressed you know? Also they never seem to want to move their bag off the bench for you in fear if they touch the bag their clothes will jump on them without asking.

3. Kids! I apologize to a lot of you because I know many of you are parents that will read this blog (bless you for that by the way) and just remember it’s not your kids personally that are making me crazy. It’s not even kids in general but some people feel the need to let their children run on the track without them  and in the wrong direction. Also some dads feel the need to bring their young kids in the locker room and I just don’t want to strip in front of your child when at the YMCA you literally have your own family locker room. Just do us all a favor and go one more door down.

mrs krabappel

4. Protein dudes. We all know them, and they are the worst. Making their weird potions and constantly telling you but not telling you directly about how much they’re taking, their lifting schedule, and how they barely even do cardio now.

bane

5. People who take the treadmill right next to you when there are plenty open. It’s almost as bad as taking the urinal right next to me when you got other options.

Patrick Stewart hello bathroom son blunt talk

Even more bonus. Now that I’m not drinking Diet Coke I’m trying all of the Lacroix flavors I can and here are my top 3 and bottom 3 choices.

Bottom 3

  1. Coconut:I don’t feel like I want to taste sun tan lotion that has been carbonated.
  2. Lime: It’s a seltzer water with lime and no gin. No sale.
  3. Orange: Just such a bummer because it’s not Sunkist but also just way too mild.

Top 3

  1. Strawberry Pineapple: you gotta schlep to Target but it’s worth it
  2. Passionfruit: Thank you Anna-Marie Jenks for that introduction
  3. Grapefruit: a bronze medal at best

Top 3 things I miss right now

  1. Club sandwiches
  2. Quesadillas
  3. Harmony’s Grapefruit Moon (that could be inspired by the Lacroix)

Special shout out to my MFB folks. Everyone checks in a lot and wants to know how it is and asks questions which I think is cool. I appreciate the support and accountability especially when a nurse who shall remain nameless tried to bust me for putting cream in my coffee but it was just coconut milk.

My Ten Resolutions for 2017

Every year I like to write out ten resolutions and post them on my desk but this year I’m going public. Here is what I’m up to in 2017 (hopefully).

  1. Bring my A1C to 7.0

Image result for diabetes gif

Pretty much have been making this resolution since I became diabetic in 99. For those you not in the know an A1c is basically like a GPA for your blood sugar. 7.0 is  a pretty chill number and I keep getting so close without actually achieving it but here’s hoping for 2017.

2. Ride a century

Image result for bike ride gif

I have successfully completed one bike ride that was over one hundred miles and I thought it would kill me. Cut to me laying in a field in East Jesus Utah with my friend Amanda right next to me contemplating all the decisions in our life that got us to that place. However for some insane reason I would like to do it again in 2017 because the feeling after was so gratifying.

3. Submit more writing/expand the blog.

Related image

I have had this blog for a while now and I want to polish it more. I also would like to submit more of the writing to other websites like Thought Catalog, or Buzzfeed Community. I would like to even add a podcast or vlog component this year.

4. Climb out of debt

Image result for poor gif

It might take a little bit more than 2017 to fix this problem but I would like to start taking some bigger stabs at my student loan pile and feel like the air tastes like oxygen again.

5. Try every class at the YMCA (or new places too)

Image result for work out class gif

Every year I write something like lose weight, or run a 5k but this seems more fun. I’ve done a decent amount of the classes but I would like to try new things this year. Hot yoga here I come.

6.Purge some shit

Image result for hoarder gif

I have too much crap and it’s time purge. It feels good to do every couple of years and I need a cleanse.

7. Finish Breaking Bad

Related image

I seriously have like 10 episodes left and its been years. Everyone is like “it builds” or “it’s the best, you won’t believe the ending”. Well you know what? I’m just going to say it; I don’t like Breaking Bad but I do feel like I should finish it so it can stop feeling like it’s a  sword over my head.

8. Convince Mary Dine to learn “The Routine” from Friends.

tv friends david schwimmer courtney cox ross gellar

Season 6 Episode 10 of Friends is easily one of my favorites. Ross and Monica pull out their junior high dance routine in order to impress the camera crew so they have a chance to be on television for their New Years Eve show. Basically since 1999 I’ve been trying to get Mary to learn this with me and by golly this is how we will bring in 2018 (we need a full year to perfect).

9. Read a Stephen King novel.

Image result for stephen king gif

This was actually a 2016 resolution that I did not fulfill this year. However as someone who reads pretty steadily I feel like you need to have one Stephen King novel under your belt.

10. Learn the breakdown from Outkast’s “Roses”

Image result for outkast roses gif

Obviously I need to be able to break it down at parties.

My Tag line/inspiration for 2017: Every year I like to think of a phrase or character quote to let be my tag line for a new year. This year’s quote was my sister’s idea but I love it and am going with it. See below.

Elle Woods

Image result for legally blonde I'll show you how valuable elle woods can be

2016 was a tough year for celebrities, politicians and probably the enviroment I’m assuming. It also wasn’t great for me, had a lot of personal setbacks and I don’t want to enter 2017 totally defeated so I’m going on the offensive this year and this my mantra. I’m showing the world how valuable I can be.

Here’s to end of the repressive reign of 2016 and a modest prayer 2017 is decent.
